A teenager who survived attempted rape in Lalmonirhat committed suicide on Tuesday by hanging herself from the ceiling fan by using a scarf.
The deceased was identified as 14-year-old Kamrunnahar Juti. She committed suicide by hanging herself in her own room of her house in Kajir Chowratari area of Harati union in Lalmonirhat sadar upazila.
Juti's father Kamruzzaman Mia has filed an unnatural death case in this incident.
Earlier on September 8, he had filed a case at the same police station against two local miscreants for trying to rape his daughter.
Investigating officer (SI) Moinul Islam said the girl's father Kamruzzaman Mia filed a case against Hamidul Islam, son of Mohammad Ali, and Nur Islam, son of Aminul Islam at Kazi Chowratari area of Harati Union for trying to rape Kamrunnahar.
The main accused in the case Hamidul Islam was arrested and sent to jail after being produced in court. Attempts are being made to arrest the other accused Nur Islam, who remains fugitive.
Kamrunnahar's grandmother Kahiron Bewa alleged that since the case was filed, the close ones of the two accused had been slandering and verbally abusing Kamrunnahar in various ways. Unable to bear the abuse, the girl committed suicide by wrapping a scarf around her neck on Tuesday.
Lalmonirhat District Superintendent of Police Abida Sultana said the cause of the girl's suicide is yet to be ascertained. Police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue for autopsy.
She added that after the attempt to rape case was filed, she met the girl and assured her of full cooperation, but still she committed suicide, the reason behind her suicide is being seriously investigated.
Lalmonirhat sadar police station OC Shah Alam said after her mother got married elsewhere, the girl had been working as a housemaid in people's houses since she was a child.
Now that she is old enough to get married, her employers sent her home recently. However, the girl could not find shelter at her step mother’s nor with her biological mother.
In September, the two culprits tried to rape her.
“We had already arrested the main accused Hamidul Islam and sent him to jail through the court. But suddenly the girl committed suicide. We are investigating this matter seriously,” said the OC.
