Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has apprehended two members of a teenage gang named “The Boss” over the killing of Md Sohag.

Mahbubul Islam Russel, 20, and Md Hridoy, 20, were arrested on early Tuesday, confirmed Lieutenant Colonel Shafiullah Bulbul, commanding officer of RAB 1.

Russel, a student of Uttara Ideal College, confessed to his involvement in the killing under primary interrogation.

He also confessed to being a member of the teenage gang led by Hridoy, said Bulbul.

“Russel would threaten people of cutting their nerves off , leading to the nickname ‘Cutter Russel’,” he added.

On the other hand, Hridoy was established as the leader of the gang which consists of 10 to 12 members.

Lieutenant Colonel Shafiullah Bulbul said RAB found it quite difficult to catch the suspects as they had learned how to evade authorities from popular Indian TV programs such as Crime Patrol and CID.

RAB is yet to catch another six to seven suspects involved in the case, he said.

He added that RAB seized two pistols during their drive to arrest Hridoy and Russel.

Sohag, a student of Uttara Public School and College, was stabbed to death on August 27 in the Uttarkhan area of Dhaka.

Bulbul said the altercation began when a passing rickshaw splashed mud on Hridoy while he was hanging out on the roadside.

When Hridoy caught the rickshaw puller and started to assault him, Sohag came forward in an attempt to stop the beating.

“Outraged at being stopped from assaulting the rickshaw puller, Hridoy along with Russel, Nadim, Sunny, Mehedi, Saad, Sabbir, and a few others turned on Sohag instead,” said the lieutenant colonel.

“At one point Russel snatched a knife from Nadim and stabbed at the victim’s belly. After that they all ran away,” he said.

Passersby and the rickshaw puller rushed Sohag to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared him dead.

After his death, Sohag’s elder brother lodged a case over the killing.
