The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police suspects that sex trafficking gang-leader Azam Khan, who forced hundreds of girls from Bangladesh into prostitution in the UAE, has assets worth Tk300 crore in Dubai.

Besides, Azim Uddin alias Mozahar alias Azam Khan has an eye-catching three-storied building and a private car in his home village in Fatikchhari upazila in Chittagong.

CID officials said Azam was a member of criminal gang Osman Bahini in Fatikchhari until 2008, but within a decade he has become the owner of huge assets.

CID now is investigating whether he or anyone else with him was involved in laundering money to Dubai.

According to sources, there were five cases filed against Azam at Fatikchhari police station from 2002 to 2007 that includes murder, robbery, and hijacking. He fled to Dubai during the 1/11 period, though he returned to the country.

The criminal gang leader Osman of Osman Bahini was killed during a “gunfight” with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in 2010. After that Azam moved to Dubai again as a worker. In the meantime, he had become involved in an international human trafficking ring.

An official of CID's organized crime said sex trafficker Azam used to target good looking garment workers and domestic help between 18 to 20 years of age.

He used to lure them by offering high paid jobs at star standard hotels in Dubai city through many brokers and three travel agencies in Dhaka, the official said.

Besides, Azam used to travel back and forth to Dhaka to take interviews of the sex traffic victims while brokers or agencies had been collecting more 100 women at a time. Those who were comparatively beautiful were given Tk50,000 as one month's advance salary after the selection.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) (Organized Crime Unit) Imtiaz Ahmed said Azam Khan is a sex trafficking gang leader who forced young Bangladeshi women into prostitution in Dubai, using tourist visas.

After taking them into Dubai, he tortured the victims in many ways, including giving electric shocks, if they refused to obey his commands.

Azam also runs three sex trafficking gangs in India and two in Pakistan, the DIG added.

Azam, 42, and two of associates Anwar Hossain Moyna and Alamin alias Diamond were arrested by CID recently.

On June 2, a case was filed against Azam at Lalbagh police station.

Meanwhile, he confessed to his involvement in the human trafficking trade before a Dhaka court under Section 164 of Code of Criminal Procedure, the CID official said.

Azam owns four hotels in Dubai -- Hotel Fortune Royal, Fortune Grand Hotel, City Tower Hotel, and Fortune Pearl Hotel and a dance club. Of those, the first three are four-star standard hotels, CID said.

Previously, Azam was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment in a fraud case filed at Fatikchhari police station on allegations of Tk20 crore fraud.

Fatikchhari police station Officer In-Charge (OC) Md Babul Akhtar, while speaking with Dhaka Tribune said: “He (Azam) was involved with a criminal gang in this area. There are multiple cases against him including murder.”
