Elderly woman tortured to death in Gopalganj

The victim's brother filed a murder case against 7 people, leading to the arrest of four women

An elderly woman was tortured to death reportedly by her step sons and their family members over a land dispute in Gopalganj.

Kulsum Begum, 60, sustained head injuries when she was beaten. Moreover, dried chili powder and hot water was poured over her before she was taken to Kotalipara Upazila Health Complex for treatment, said her brother Kalam Fakir.

The incident took place at Rajindarpar village of Kotalipara upazila on Saturday morning and she later succumbed to her injuries around 8pm at Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH).

Dr Sushanta Baidya, health and family planning officer of the upazila hospital, said the injured woman needed eight stitches on her head and was later referred to KMCH.

The victim's brother Kalam had filed a murder case against 7 people at Kotalipara police station, leading to the arrest of 4 women in connection to the incident, confirmed Kotalipara police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sheikh Lutfor Rahman.

Kulsum is the second wife of Sabar Ali Sikdar.

According to the case statement, a long-standing dispute over land ownership had been ongoing between the victim and her step sons. On Saturday around 9:30am, her step son Alauddin Sikdar, his wife Lima, and brother Ripon Sikdar attacked the woman.

Two of the victim's sons and their wives were also injured when they attempted to rescue her, the case details further mentions.

OC Sheikh Lutfor Rahman said further actions will be taken after an investigation into the matter.
