The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police has seized 140,000 fake Covid-19 protective masks and 1,000kg of fabric for making the masks from a factory at the Narinda area of Old Dhaka on Sunday. Five people have been arrested for allegedly storing the masks.
The suspects are factory owner Khalid Imran, 40, employee Rehan Yosuf, 19, Abdul Sobhan, 20, Jitu Chandra Das, 36, and Osman Goni.
Rajib Farhan, additional superintendent of CID (Serious Crime), said a CID team conducted a drive at the Sunrise Bag Factory in Bhuter Goli after receiving a tip-off that fake masks were being produced there.
The seized 1,000kg of fabric has a market value of around Tk250,000, according to CID.
The suspects have admitted to supplying the masks to various businesses for a long time. CID has filed a case with Wari police station and the suspects were sent to the court.
Drives against illegal mask or sanitizer factories are going to continue, said Jisan Haque, ASP of CID media.
