Police have arrested 109 people for their alleged involvement in illegally collecting tolls from vehicles.
Police headquarters' Assistant Inspector General (AIG-media) Md Sohel Rana confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Thursday.
Concerned units of police conducted raids at different points on roads and highways since June 1, arrested 109 people for illegal collection of tolls, and filed 51 cases against them, he said.
Earlier in June, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed took the initiative to stop extortion on vehicles. He directed police units to take action against the extortionists after discussing the issue with vehicle owners at a meeting held at the police headquarters.
As per the instructions of the IGP, the concerned units of police have been taking strict action since, said Sohel.
He added that the operation will continue until extortion on vehicles cease completely.
