Grenades, suicide vests found in suspected Savar militant den

Update : 28 May 2017, 01:03 AM
Police found no militant, but seized seven hand grenades, bomb-making materials, some mobiles and laptops, and three suicide vests from a suspect hideout in Savar. After concluding a raid in a six-storey building at Genda area on Saturday afternoon, Dhaka’s Superintendent of Police Shah Mizan Shafiur Rahman in a press meet made the comment. “There was no casualty in the raid that saw no detention as well. But, militants were staying here to plot sabotage,” he said. Earlier in the day, a bomb disposal unit of The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) reached the scene and resumed the operation that was postponed the previous night. “Seven hand grenades and three suicide recovered from the hideout vests have been defused. Bearing balls, batteries, gun-powders, other bomb-making materials, several cell phones ans laptops are the other seized items,” he said. On Friday evening, the CTTC raided a five-storey building of suspicion of being a militant den in the same area. After half-an-hour, the unit carried out a drive in the six-storey building as a second suspected militant hideout, just 200 yards away from the first one. Police suspended the operation the same night, resuming it at 10am on Saturday after the bomb disposal unit joined the raid. The SP said those, who fled the scene, might be the members of militant group Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh. Police on Friday night told reporters that they detained a woman and rescued two children from the first hideout. But, two male militants escaped the raid, they then said.
