The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday arrested three more persons in connection with their suspected involvement in the trafficking of some of the 26 Bangladeshis who were killed in Libya on May 28.

The detainees, Sohag Hossain, 50, Khalid Chowdhury, 42, and Sanzida, 38, were arrested from different parts of Dhaka.

Syeda Zannat Ara, Special Superintendent of Police (Serious Crimes and Homicide Squad), reported on the arrests at a press briefing in Dhaka yesterday.

The serious crime unit of CID’s organized crime department has been carrying out drives across Bangladesh following the filing of cases over the Libya tragedy.

“We are conducting drives across the country to arrest the perpetrators behind this incident. We are committed to punishing the human traffickers as per law. We are hopeful that all those responsible will be caught very soon. It will be possible to file the charge sheet by next week.

“And after that, if some of the criminals are found to be abroad, we will bring them back to Bangladesh,” the police official said.

The CID filed three cases with Paltan and Banani police stations over the murder of 26 Bangladeshi migrants in the North African country.

The agency is also investigating a total of 12 cases filed across the country over the gruesome incident.

On May 28, 26 Bangladesh citizens were killed and 11 others were injured in a gun attack by some human traffickers in the desert town of Mizdah, some 180km from Tripoli, the capital of Libya.

Bangladesh reached out to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to bring the bodies back home and sought compensation for their families. However, the victims were buried in Mizdah.

The Bangladesh government also sought information on the human traffickers and demanded punishment of those involved in human trafficking and killing, following their arrest.

On May 30, Bangladesh released the names of 23 of those who were killed.

The 23 deceased are Sujan and Kamrul from Gopalganj; Jakir Hossain, Jewel, Firuz, Jewel-2, Manik, Asadul, Aynal Mollah, Monir, Sajib, Shaheen, and Shamim from Madaripur; Arfan from Dhaka; Lal Chand from Magura; Rajon, Rahim, Shakil, Sakib, Akash, Shohag and Muhammad Ali from Kishoreganj; and Rakibul from Jessore.
