A Dhaka court has set June 30 for hearing a petition by the police seeking to formally arrest Kamal Uddin alias Haji Kamal—suspected ringleader of a human trafficking group—in a case over trafficking Bangladeshis to Libya.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Millat Hossain scheduled the hearing following a petition by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) .
On June 1, the Rapid Action Battalion detained Kamal from Dhaka's Shahjadpur .
CID Inspector Mizanur Rahman, the investigating officer, lodged the petition with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka on Thursday .
Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Motaleb Hossain, general recording officer (GRO) of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court in Dhaka, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Sunday.
CID has filed a case against 38 people for the trafficking and murder of 26 Bangladeshi migrants in Libya.
Another 8-10 unnamed people were also included in the case filed under the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking Act with Paltan police station in Dhaka on June 2.
A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed two suspected human traffickers—Md Shahidur Rahman, and Md Mahbubur Rahman—on a 4-day remand each, in the case for trafficking Bangladeshi people to Libya.
Another court, on June 2, rejected the bail plea of Kamal Hossain alias Haji Kamal, 55, and sent him to jail in connection with a case filed with Bhatara police station under the Bangladesh Passport Act.
Bhatara police station SI, and case IO, Nurul Islam, produced Kamal in court and also pleaded that the court should keep him in jail till investigation of the case filed against him under the Passport Act is completed.
RAB, on June 2, filed the case under the Passport Act. They recovered 31 passports from his possession.
Following the hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sufian Md Noman rejected Kamal's bail petition and ordered him to be sent to jail.
On May 28, 26 Bangladesh citizens were killed and 11 others were injured in a gun attack by some human traffickers in the desert town of Mizdah, some 180km from Tripoli, the capital of Libya.
Bangladesh reached out to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to bring the bodies back home and sought compensation for their families. However, the victims were buried in Mizdah.
The Bangladesh government also sought information on the human traffickers and demanded punishment of those involved in human trafficking and killing, following their arrest.
On May 30, Bangladesh released the names of 23 of those who were killed.
The 23 deceased are Sujan and Kamrul from Gopalganj; Jakir Hossain, Jewel, Firuz, Jewel-2, Manik, Asadul, Aynal Mollah, Monir, Sajib, Shaheen, and Shamim from Madaripur; Arfan from Dhaka; Lal Chand from Magura; Rajon, Rahim, Shakil, Sakib, Akash, Shohag and Muhammad Ali from Kishoreganj; and Rakibul from Jessore.
