Two members of banned outfit East Bengal Communist Party have been killed in an alleged gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Rajbari district’s Goalanda Upazila.
The deceased are Rakibul Hasan Bappi, 30 and his associate Lalan Mollah, 33. Two RAB officials have also been injured in the incident.
Faridpur RAB-8 Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Md Raeesuddin said the incident took place early Saturday in Debgram area located near the Padma River.
"We have also recovered a rifle, a foreign pistol, two daggers, two LG pistol, 60 rounds of bullets, two mobile phones, two torch lights, two clocks, many leaflets along with intoxicants."
ASP Raeesuddin said: "Being tipped off we conducted a drive in the remote grassland area where the members of the banned outfit were having a meeting.
"Sensing RAB’s presence, the extremists opened fire towards the RAB officials. RAB fired back in retaliation, leaving Rakibul and Lalan dead."
He also said: "His cohorts however managed to flee the scene."
"Around 137 bullets were exchanged during the skirmish. The injured RAB officials are Lance Corporal Harun-Ar-Rashid and PC Sirajul Islam.
"The bodies are sent to Rajbari morgue for autopsy," ASP Raeesuddin added
