A husband has slashed his first wife to death with a machete, allegedly for objecting to his practice of polygamy, at Kalpani in the Mirpur area of Dhaka on Friday.
According to police sources, rickshaw puller Imam Ali, 40, had been locked in a marital dispute with his wife of 12 years Helena, 27, after she took objection to his marrying for the third time about two months ago. The couple lived in a shanty in the Kalpani area with their two children.
Subsequently, on Friday afternoon, Imam slashed his wife in the neck with a machete in a fit of rage during an argument, said Pollobi police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Dadan Fakir. Locals captured Imam shortly after the incident and handed him over to police.
The OC added that Helena had been rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) by her brothers, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Ratan, one of Helena’s brothers, told the Dhaka Tribune: “My brother Milon lives near our sister’s residence. After hearing about the attack, we rushed there and found my sister critically injured.”
“We took her to the hospital as fast as we could, where the doctor instructed us to manage blood for her to get a transfusion. When we managed to gather the blood, the doctor told us she had already died,” said an emotional Ratan.
OC Dadan Fakir further said: “A murder case has been lodged against Imam Ali and we are investigating the incident. Marital conflict seems to be the primary reason behind the murder, but we cannot rule out other motives without further investigation.”
