A youth was killed after being beaten by employees of a restaurant-cum-bar in Dhaka over his outstanding bills.
The dead, Md Joni, 35, was a trader at Shahbagh flower market and also a Jubo Dal leader of Dhaka’s Ward 21. According to police, he was also accused for the murder of flower trader Salim Shahi.
Police, quoting witnesses, said some agitated employees of Sakura Restaurant and Bar near Shahbagh intersection swooped on Joni around Sunday midnight, accusing him of not paying bills after consuming alcohol there.
Joni’s brother Nayon Ahmed said Joni had phoned his wife when attacked.
Mentioning the name of bar employee Mahbub, Joni was heard saying: “I always saved you whenever any trouble appeared. But, today you have gathered your aides to beat me.”
Police later rescued Joni and brought him to DMCH where doctors declared him dead.
Shahbagh police station OC Abul Hasan said they detained 46 people including the bar manager for interrogation and looking for Mahbub who went into hiding after a raid at the bar.
