A man has been arrested over the attempted rape of an eight-year-old girl—in a mango grove—in Chapaiwabaganj's Bargharia Nilkuthi area.
The girl was attacked around 8pm on Monday.
Police arrested the suspect, Selim Reja, 45, of Nimtola's Fokirapara neighbourhood. Selim is a drug addict and a handyman, said the police.
Ziaur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chapainawabganj Sadar Model Police Station, and local sources, said, at night, the child went to a mango grove beside her home to pick mangoes; then Selim attempted to rape her in the grove. Hearing her screams, locals rushed to the area, rescued her, and captured Selim as he tried to run away. They then handed him over to the police.
The girl was taken to a medical facility for treatment and a case will be filed soon, added the OC.
