Angry villagers in Shreepur upazila of Gazipur gave three cops a good beating on Sunday night over allegations of snatching money and cell phone handset from a youth.
According to local sources, Shreepur police station Sub-Inspector Ashraful Islam along with two constables and their sources went to Dhanua village of the upazila in plainclothes around 7:30pm.
They detained Saiful Islam, son of late Hatem Ali from Patharpar area, and tried to brand him as a gambler. The police personnel reportedly snatched Tk 60,000 in cash and a cell phone handset from the detained youth.
As the cops reportedly started beating the youth demanding more money, people of the area gathered around the scene.
The plainclothes law enforcers tried to run away, but were caught and confined by the locals in Dhanua Govt Primary School. The locals gave them a good beating there.
The cops were later released when the villagers came to know about their identity.
Saiful Islam’s brother Shakiful Islam told reporters that his brother is innocent and the police men had snatched the money and the cell phone handset from Saiful without introducing themselves as law enforcers.
SI Ashraful Islam denied the allegations against him saying he had visited the spot, but neighter anynone was held by him, nor any police member was attacked by the villagers.
Sreepur police station Officer-in-Charge Asaduzzaman said he did not know anything about the incident.
