Jubo League member killed in Jessore

The victim’s younger brother was gravely injured in the attack

Jessore Ward-3 Jubo League Joint General Secretary Abdul Barik, 45, has been killed by members of a rival group, according to the police. His brother Anisur Rahman was seriously injured in the attack.

The incident occurred around 10:30am on Sunday at Chaugachha upazila of Jessore.

Abul Bashar, another brother of the victims, said: “My brothers Abdul and Anisur were catching fish in our pond. Suddenly, some known criminals of the area attacked them with sharp weapons and left them for dead. Later, some local people found them and took them to the hospital.”

Convener of upazila Jubo League and Vice Chairman of Chaugachha upazila parishad Debashish Mishra Joy confirmed the incident. “The attackers joined the Awami League shortly before the last parliamentary elections,” he said.

Fulasara union Awami League Organizing Secretary Saidur Rahman Pannu said: “Known criminals from another Awami League group attacked them. Abdul Barik was declared dead at the hospital, and Anisur Rahman was referred to Jessore General Hospital for better treatment.”

Chaugachha hospital emergency department's Dr Suraiya Parveen said: “Abdul Barik died before he was even brought to the hospital. Both he and his brother had multiple wounds from sharp weapons.”

Chaugachha police station Sub-Inspector Akikul Islam said: “There are cases filed against both the deceased and the attackers. They were rivals. Nannu, Julu and Arif were among the people who attacked the two. We are looking into the matter.”
