3 fraudsters arrested in RAB sting operation

Update : 15 Mar 2017, 06:35 PM
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested three people from the Shyamoli area of Dhaka on Wednesday on suspicion of attempting to scam a 36-year-old man out of Tk22 lakh. ASP Firoz Kauser, operation officer of RAB 2, told the Dhaka Tribune that they had conducted Wednesday's sting operation after Shahin Mia went to RAB 2 Bosila camp to lodge a complaint against three men who had offered to build a mobile tower at his house for an up-front investment of Tk22 lakh. "They claimed he stood to make a lot of money from it because the mobile companies would have to pay him for using this tower," the ASP said. Shahin claimed Masudur Rahman, 58, Zakir Ahmed, 52, and Mamunur Rashid, 35, had set up a fake business called JB International which they use to show exceedingly high profits from various mobile network tower construction projects and chemical trade deals. After gaining their trust of their intended targets, the fraudsters offer to make them partners in these projects, promising financial benefits in the future and asking for large sums of money as initial investment. Once they get the money, the scammers change their business address and go off the radar. Shahin was expected to make an initial instalment payment of Tk42,000 to the trio on Wednesday. RAB instructed Shahin to go ahead with the scheduled payment and arrested the trio as soon as they met their intended target at Shyamoli.
