Update : 11 Mar 2017, 04:40 PM
Two cases have been filed against a driver and 300 unnamed people over Friday’s accident in which a driver was killed and a police vehicle torched in Comilla Sadar upazila. A motorcyclist was killed when a microbus carrying four policemen hit the bike from behind in Balutupa area of Comilla on Friday morning. Later locals stopped the microbus and vandalised it before setting it on fire. Kotwali police SI Jahirul Alam filed one case against 300 people on the charge of setting fire to a police microbus, and another case was filed by Manik, the brother of the victim, Rasel, against the microbus driver, Abul Bashar, on Friday night. Witnesses said the microbus chased the youth for nearly a kilometre before hitting his motorcycle when it reached Balutupa area, leaving him dead on the spot. His body was found in a paddy field some 200 yards away from the main road. On an allegation that police officers attempted to hide the body, agitated locals assaulted three policemen and set fire to their vehicle. Later additional police rushed to the spot and rescued their fellow officers from the locals. The district administration formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident. “Rasel was accused in four cases of motorcycle theft, drug dealing, and smuggling,” Kotwali police OC Abdus Salam Miah told the Dhaka Tribune on Saturday morning. Regarding the bid to hide the body, the OC said: “We found no such evidence in our primary investigation, but a probe is still underway. We can share details of the incident later.” “The microbus was rented. We are yet to identify the vehicle owner and settle on the compensation,” Comilla Sadar south police OC Nazrul Islam said.
