Schoolgirl hacked to death in Dhaka

The attacker has been identified as Sohel, 25, who has been detained

A schoolgirl was hacked to death near Gopibagh rail gate in Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon.

Police have identified the victim as Sharmin, 16, student of Class 10 at Shahid Kazi Arif High School and College in Sayedabad, Dhaka.

Speaking to reporters, Wari police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Harun-ur-Rashid said: "Sharmin was walking from her house in KM Lane towards Gopibagh rail gate when a young man attacked her from behind with a boti [a cutting instrument used in the kitchen]. She died on the spot."

Witnessing the incident, locals chased and caught the man and gave him a thrashing. Police later rescued him and admitted him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said the SI.

The man has been identified as Sohel, 25, who has been detained.

Sharmin's body has been sent to Midford morgue for autopsy, he added.

Police suspect that Sohel had been stalking Sharmin for a while. "The suspect is unconscious so we could not question him yet. We are investing the matter."

Wari police is preparing to file a case in this regard, the SI said.
