The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police has arrested a man named Golam Faruk on charges of arms, drugs and money laundering along with his wife Afroza Akhter alias Anne.
They were arrested in a drive conducted by a CID team from Dhaka's Badda area on Monday and Tuesday.
The CID claimed that the arrested Golam Faruk is an arms dealer and drug godfather.
CID Special Superintendent of Police Molla Nazrul Islam said this at a press conference in CID's office in Malibagh on Tuesday afternoon.
He said a drug case was filed with Fatullah police station of Narayanganj in 2017. During the investigation of the case, a money laundering case was filed against 17 people, including Nurul Haque Bhutto- yaba trader listed with the Home Ministry-,his elder brother, nephew and bKash agent, with Teknaf police station on August 29, 2018.
Golam Faruk and his wife were arrested in connection to that case, he added, saying some 34 people have been arrested so far regarding Bhutto's case.
In the briefing, Molla Nazrul Islam depicted Golam and his wife's story on acquiring hundreds of crores of money, who once used to live in a village in Chapainawabganj and were not financially solvent.
After coming to Dhaka in 2009, they met a group in Gazipur, with whom they started their business of arms dealing, and also a garments business simultaneously. Later, they also got involved in yaba trade, Molla Nazrul added.
They first started trading yaba with the supplies from Teknaf's yaba businessman Nurul Haque Bhutto's uncle Gura Mia. Later, he used to take supplies from Nurul and his elder brother. Golam Faruk amassed hundred crores worth of money trading yaba.
Nazrul Islam said Golam has a machinery factory called Eleza Expert International, where he has invested almost Tk1 crore.
Besides, they have deposited large amounts of money in several banks, some under their names and some under their aliases.
The CID special superintendent said they have found while investigating that Golam has eight drug cases filed against him in different police stations, including Tejgaon and Uttara East police station under Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Sadar police station and Shibganj police station in Chapainawabganj.
He also said arrangements will be made to confiscate their wealth and deposited them in the government treasury soon.
Before the arrest of Golam Faruk and his wife, another drug dealer Afzal Hossain Imon along with his wife Sania Afroz and their son Salauddin Prince were arrested from Mirpur due to the connection through their financial transaction with yaba trader Nurul Haque Bhutto.
Later, police arrested drug lord Rupa Islam, her husband Al Amin, associate Riaz, Faysal and bKash agent Jony and Kuddus from Mirpur Bihari Camp in connection to yaba trader Nurul's elder brother Nur Mohammad. Police suspected they were involved in a financial transaction with him.
Subsequently, drug dealer Rayhan, Asaduzzaman, Swapan from Narsingdi, bKash agent Abbas, drug lord Rani, her associate Nayim, Ibrahim, bKash agent Shahjalal, Nasir Uddin Sohel, were arrested.
Besides, Brahmanbaria's Musa Miah and Joypurhat's Abul Hossain were arrested with the connection of their financial transaction with Nurul.
