One more detained over bid to snatch Mufti Hannan

Update : 08 Mar 2017, 07:00 PM
Police have detained one more person in connection with the audacious attempt to snatch one of the country's most notorious militant masterminds from police custody. “With the help of Nasingdi police, a police team from Tongi arrested Sabuj after raiding his home,” Tongi police station OC Firoz Talukder told the Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday. “He will be handed over to Gazipur detectives in the afternoon.” No other details of the detainee were disclosed by police. In movie-style high drama, an attempt was made to snatch Mufti Hannan on Monday evening when a prison convoy carrying militants en route to Kashimpur Central Jail was attacked by a lone bomber near Tongi College Gate at around 6pm. Police managed to capture Mostofa Kamal, 25, from Mymensingh, in possession of about a dozen crude bombs and Tk7,500 in cash. During his primary interrogation, he told the police that he was paid Tk10,000 to hurl the bombs at the prison van. Police later picked up Kamal’s parents from his village home. It has been confirmed that some of the prisoners, who were in the van at that time, are close associates of Mufti Hannan, chief of a faction of Harkat-ul Jihad al-Islami Bangladesh (HujiB). Mufti Hannan, a death row convict, was read out his death warrant earlier in February. He had also filed a review petition against the sentence.
