In yet another incident of murder over gang rivalry, police have arrested eight for allegedly killing a rival gang member in Dakshin Khan in Dhaka on Saturday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (media) Masudur Rahman on Sunday revealed the information at a news briefing at the DMP media centre: “Detectives booked Saif, Monir, Arafat, Saiful, Meherab, Aapel, Sifat and Sohel (teenagers all) from different areas of Sylhet and Dinajpur recently.”
According to police, one of the group members, Mehedi Hasan, was stabbed to death on August 31 in Nagaria area under Chairman Para of Dakshin Khan.
Two gangs of teenagers, “Arafat” and “Shanto”, are active in the area, he said, adding that Mehedi belonged to “Shanto” gang.
A few days leading up to the murder, a heated argument ensued between Mehedi and a loyalist to Arafat group, Kausar Ahmed, said the police.
Afterwards, on August 18, Shanto group members assaulted Saif, a member of Arafat group, over the matter.
Following the incident, the Arafat group members retaliated by attacking Mehedi group during a political event on August 31, said Masudur Rahman.
Based on the CCTV footage, and primary information from interrogation of the arrestees, the deputy commissioner said two of the attackers, Sani and Shohel held Mehedi while Arafat group members hit him with a stick, and a member, Saif, stabbed him with a Swiss knife.
Critically injured, the victim was taken to a local hospital and then referred to Kurmitola General Hospital, where the doctors pronounced him dead.
The following day, Mehedi’s father filed a case with Dakshin Khan police station.
