WB hands over one more duty-free car to CIID

World Bank has handed over another car to Customs Intelligence Investigation Directorate (CIID) out of the 16 cars allegedly brought into Bangladesh using their duty-free benefits. CIID Director General Moinul Khan confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune on Sunday. In a briefing, CIID said the car was handed over by the World Bank on February 22. The CIID had sent a letter to the World Bank’s Country Director Qimia Fan, asking for the details of about 16 cars which have allegedly been brought into the country by their staff using duty-free benefits.

So far, the bank has handed over three vehicles of out its 16 cars. A letter, signed by Qimia Fan, says its Rural Development Specialist Nihal Fernando bought the car using the duty-free benefits that are accorded to some specified international organisations under the Privileged Persons (Customs Procedure) Rules 2003. When Nihal left Bangladesh after fulfilling his tenure here from 2008-2010, he did not hand over the passbook or submit car details to customs during the departure, as per the rules. World Bank chief has pledged all out support to the CIID during its investigation.
