A tripartite clash between followers of late Pir Sureshwar, locals and police left three villagers shot and at least 20 others injured including eight policemen at Tumchar in Lakshmipur on Friday night.
According to local sources, villagers opposing rituals of the followers of Sureshwar interrupted their Urs on its opening night on Thursday. When the followers continued their rituals on the second night on Friday, a mob consisting of villagers attacked and vandalised a Tumchar house where the ceremony was being held.
The mob attacked policemen guarding the site of the Urs, injuring Officer-in-Charge of Lakshmipur Sadar police station Abdullah Al Mamun, precipitating a tripartite clash that police fired 80 bullets to bring under control.
The injured were taken to different hospitals in Lakshmipur. The three individuals who sustained bullet wounds were Rakib Hossain, Yousuf and Rahid Al Jihad.
Lakshmipur Police Super ASM Mahtab Uddin told the Dhaka Tribune that followers of Sureshwar did not have permission to host their three-day ceremony, however they had permission on the first day. Police apprehended 10 persons in connection to the clash. A huge number of law enforcers have been deployed in the area.
