A Dhaka court yesterday once again asked the investigating officer (IO) to submit by July 26 the probe report of the case filed over the attack at Holey Artisan Bakery in the capital’s Gulshan in July 2016.
Metropolitan Magistrate Nurun Nahar Yasmin passed the order as police Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit's Inspector Humayun Kabir, also investigation officer of the case, failed to submit a probe report yesterday, the scheduled day for submission of it.
This is not the first time that the CTTC has failed to file the investigation report, with the court having extended the submission date 20 times in the past two years.
The CTTC unit has in these two years arrested seven people, including six suspected New-JMB militants and Hasnat Karim, a former North South University teacher.
Of them, five militants have given confessional statements before courts on different dates in this case.
Gunmen stormed the Holey Artisan Bakery, opened fire and took around 40 people, including restaurant staff and guests - both locals and foreigners – hostage on July 1, 2016.
Twenty hostages - nine Italians, seven Japanese, one Indian, one Bangladeshi-born American and two Bangladeshis - were killed.
Two senior police officers - Salauddin Ahmed Khan and DB’s assistant commissioner Robiul Karim - were killed as they tried to rescue the hostages.
Thirteen people, including three foreigners, were rescued while 20 bodies of the hostages were recovered from the restaurant after commandos stormed the café the next morning.
After the deadly incident, a case was filed with Gulshan police station under the Anti-terrorism Act.
