Detectives have arrested the alleged mastermind behind the killings of four young men who were found slaughtered in a paddy field in the Baladighi village of Shibganj uapzila on May 7.
The arrested Zahid alias Tera Zahid, from Kathgara Naona in Shibganj upazila, was apprehended from Kalai upazila of Joypurhat district. He was also accused in a dozen other murder cases, police said.
A team of district Detective Branch (DB) of police, led by Inspector Aslam Ali, conducted a drive in the Punat area of Kalai and arrested Zahid around midnight on Wednesday.
A knife used in the murders was also recovered from his possession.
With this, four of the nine people who directly took part in the murders have been arrested, police said.
Earlier on May 14, police arrested three killers – Jewel Sheikh, 25, of Chawkpara village in Shibganj upazila, Abul Kalam Azad, 48, of Talukdarpara of Chandanpur, and Rubel Miah of Daboir village.
Meanwhile, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members arrested two more suspects over the murders – M Abu Bakkar Pramanik, 50, of Badladighi village, and M Zahidul Islam alias Tera, 48, of Kathpara. They were later handed over to Shibganj Police Station.
On May 7, four young men, Zakaria Islam, 32, Shabrul Islam, 35, Helal Uddin, 36, and Khabir were found slaughtered in a paddy field in Baladighi village of Shibganj upazila.
They were murdered over a share of money from selling drugs, claimed police.
