
A Detective Branch of Police (DB) inspector was killed during a gunfight in the Mirpur area of Dhaka early on Tuesday.
Jalal Uddin, of Kaliganj area under Jhenaidah district, was shot in the head as he took part in a raid at a three-storey building near Alimuddin School in Modhyo Pirerbag at around 12:30am on Tuesday.
DMP Deputy Commissioner (Mirpur Zone) Masud Ahmed told the Dhaka Tribune that the DB team were acting on a tip-off and attempting to recover weapons stolen from two police sergeants a month back.
“A group of miscreants opened fire on the DB team, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Shahadat Hossain, when they tried to raid the building,” Masud said. “In retaliation, the DB officials fired back.”
The deputy commissioner said a critically injured Jalal was admitted to Square Hospital at around 1am, where he was pronounced dead an hour later.
“Hearing the news, DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia and other high officials went to the spot and also visited Square Hospital,” Masud said.
The autopsy on Inspector Jalal was conducted at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) Tuesday afternoon.

Police sources said another sub-inspector was also injured in the gunfight. However, his identity could not be ascertained at the time of this report being filed.
After hearing about the gunfight, members of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) went to the spot and detained four people in the building.
While visiting the spot, the DMP commissioner said police were conducting raids at adjacent buildings to find information about the miscreants, whom he suspected had fled using a back exit of the building.
Proloy Kumar Joardar, deputy commissioner at DMP’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, said: “The miscreants were on the second floor of the building. They attacked the DB officials when they tried to go to the third floor of the building.”
DB Additional Commissioner Debdas Bhattacharya told the Dhaka Tribune: “We are interrogating the detainees to find out information about the miscreants. Several teams are working to arrest them.”
Jalal Uddin, of Kaliganj area under Jhenaidah district, joined the Bangladesh Police as a constable in 1989 and was transferred to the DB of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) two months ago after being promoted.
Jalal's namaz-e-janaza was held at Rajarbagh Police Line after Zohr prayers on Tuesday. He leaves a wife and two daughters, who live in Dhaka's Basabo area.
