According to RAB, the elite force also recovered 630 copies of customer forms containing false information and pictures, 186 fake NIDs, 136 used mobile phones, 23 new mobile phones, six laptops, numerous pictures of unidentified people, a number of computer parts and Tk157,983 in cash. Following a tip-off, RAB conducted the drive at MR Communications located on the sixth floor of Yantai Chinese Restaurant’s building under Pallobi Police Station in Dhaka. “When the RAB team entered the office of MR Communications, they found people in the process of making fake NIDs, with false information and pictures,” said Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan, senior assistant director of RAB’s Legal and Media Wing. He said, during the initial interrogation, the detainees explained how they ran their operation by scamming people who wanted to register their sim cards but did not know how to by offering to fill out the forms for them. “They collected sim cards from other members of the syndicate working in mobile phone operating companies, they would then use the NID number and photos of the clients to register those sim cards with false information. Later, they submitted the NID numbers and pictures to the operator companies and also used these to make fake NIDs,” Mizanur said, adding that they had to meet a fixed target amount set by the distributors of mobile phone operators. During the investigation, RAB found that people from distributors, recruited retailers and salesmen were all involved with the scam, the services of the syndicate being particularly beneficial to militants. According to the RAB official, the raid was a result of a long investigation, with many criminals yet to be located as they used the syndicate themselves to create false NIDs. The arrestees were handed over to Pallobi Police Station which will file a case in connection.
