Update : 15 Mar 2018, 04:55 PM
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested four drug peddlers, including their kingpin, along with 1,23,000 pieces of yaba pills from Dhaka’s West Dhanmondi area on Wednesday. The arrestees are the kingpin Md Alam, and his associates Md Jasim Uddin, Md Salauddin and Md Mizanur Rahman. Acting on a tip-off, a team of RAB 2 has caught the four with the banned drug after conducting a drive in an apartment at West Dhanmondi’s Modhubazar area around 4:35pm, the elite force sources said at a press briefing at RAB's Media Centre in Dhaka's Karwan Bazar on Thursday. Commanding officer of RAB 2 Lt Col Md Anwaruz Zaman told the Dhaka Tribune that Alam had been in the business for four years. During the interrogation, Alam confessed that he got addicted to yaba when his real estate, guest house rental and shrimp farming businesses boomed. Later, he came in touch with a drug dealer from Myanmar who got him involved in yaba trading, supplying pills in several parts of the country. Another arrestee, Alam’s brother Jasim Uddin, told RAB that he is an honours third year student of social science at Dhaka College. To bear his study expenses, he used to supply yaba pills to school and college students as per Alam’s suggestion. Jasim even rented a separate flat to set up a drug den. Another arrestee, Salauddin, said he used to be a motor mechanic. He came in touch with Alam who got him involved in this business as Alam’s associate. Mizanur, the fourth arrestee, also got involved in the business with Alam in the hope of making quick cash. Aside from the pills, RAB has recovered a total of Tk81,000 cash, and seven mobile SIM cards.
