Denying the allegations, Miru, who is now absconding, claimed that Shimul had been injured by a hand bomb hurled by his rival faction, led by Abdur Rahim, the suspended president of AL's Shahjadpur municipality unit.
On the other hand, Shimul’s cousin Abul Kalam Azad told the Dhaka Tribune: “Shimul was capturing photos of the mayor firing from his gun. When the mayor noticed it, he also shot Shimul.”
The journalist, well-known in the area for his bravery and sincerity, succumbed to his injuries while being shifted to Dhaka Friday afternoon.
His grandmother Rokeya Bewa, 90, died on Saturday grieving the death of her grandson.“Miru fired five bullets from his gun, one of which pierced through Shimul's head. Shimul fell on the ground. He was discharging his professional duties,” Awami League MP from Sirajganj 6 constituency Hasibur Rahman Swapan said Saturday, demanding his arrest.
Hasibur made the statement before the namaj-e-janaza of the slain journalist on Shahjadpur Pilot School playground. He was the upazila correspondent of the Daily Samakal.
Government high-ups, journalists and locals were present at the janaza.
Police arrested two brothers of Mayor Miru, also the organising secretary of the district unit AL, on Friday, and four others in connection with the murder. The shotgun has also been seized by the police.
“There had been no conflict within the Awami League in Shahjadpur. But the mayor and his two brothers have established a reign of terror in the area,” Hasibur further alleged.
