An activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League has been stabbed to death allegedly by a rival group at Tilagarh in Sylhet city as a result of a turf war.
The deceased has been identified as Tanim Khan, a 20-year-old student of Sylhet Govt College and an activist of the college unit of the Awami League’s student wing.
He was a follower of district Awami League unit’s Youth and Sports Affairs Secretary Ranjit Sarkar, said Shah Paran police station OC Akhtar Hossain.
He said Tanim was attacked around 9pm on Sunday at Tilagarh Point reportedly by members of a group which follows Sylhet City Corporation Councillor Azad.
Tanim, with several stab wounds including one on his throat, was rushed in critical condition to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where duty doctors declared him dead, said the OC.
He added that the two groups had long been at loggerheads over establishing their dominance at MC College.
The police official said the attack on Tanim had followed a violent clash between the groups that took place last Thursday. Four people were injured.
On January 1, another clash at the city’s Court Point had left another Chhatra League activist named Abul Hasnat dead.
