Two suspected robbers have been killed in a gunfight with police in Comilla in the early hours of Saturday. Another five robbers were also arrested during the raid.
The deceased, identified as Russell (28) and Faruk (24), were shot in Hatimara area of Debidwar Upazila, near the Comilla-Sylhet Highway. Their bodies were discovered at the scene following the gunfight.
According to the Detective Branch of Police, the raid was led by Comilla police Superintendent Abdullah Al Mamun based on a tip-off that a gang of 10-15 people were gathering in the area with plans to commit a robbery.
The police team came under fire when conducting the raid in Hatimara at around 3:30pm, forcing law enforcement to retaliate. Robbers Russel and Faruk were rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital where on-call doctors declared them dead. The bodies were then moved to the hospital morgue.
DB Sub Inspector Shah Kamal Akand said the deceased were members of an inter-district robbery gang.
Comilla Detective Branch Officer-in-Charge Manjur Alam told the Dhaka Tribune that a sub-inspector and four constables were also injured in the shootout.
On December 19, robbers from the gang wounded Jahirul Islam, brother of Criminal Investigation Department Additional DIG Shah Alam, while robbing their home in Jafarganj village in Debidwar Upazila.
The gang is suspected to have been involved in a number of other robberies in the area.
