Twenty-nine people, including the president and general secretary of Feni district unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), a pro-BNP student organisation, have been sued over an attack that allegedly targeted BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s motorcade.
Sub-Inspector Nurul Haque of Feni Model police station filed the case on Wednesday, OC Rashed Khan Choudhury told the Dhaka Tribune.
The accused JCD leaders are President Noim Ullah Choudhury and General Secretary Salah Uddin. Other accused include BNP's Feni district leaders Zakir Hossain Jashim, Alamgir Choudhury and MA Khaleque. Some 30 to 35 unnamed people have also been made accused in the case.
Meanwhile, the police arrested six of the accused and produced them before a court with a remand petition. The court sent them to prison after setting a hearing date.
On Tuesday, unidentified miscreants hurled petrol bombs at two buses in Feni Sadar upazila, allegedly targeting Khaleda Zia’s motorcade as it was passing through the area on its way back to Dhaka after the BNP chief's visit to the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar.
The two empty buses were parked near a fuelling station on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Feni's Mohipal area. Soon after the incident, BNP leaders including Khaleda alleged that leaders and activists of the ruling Awami League were behind the attack.
The Awami League denied the allegation, saying that the incident was a result of a feud between BNP leaders Zainul Abedin and Rehana Akhter Ranu.
Holding a press conference on Wednesday, Zainul, however, refuted the ruling party's allegations, saying its men were spreading falsehoods to cover up the incident.
“With the help of the media, the people of the country can see very well who had carried out the attack. There is no feud between Ranu and me. She [Ranu] is my niece,” said Zainul, also an adviser to the BNP chief.
