A team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested the kingpin of a notorious child trafficking gang in Gulistan area of Dhaka.
Sahabuddin alias Selim, hailing from Narayanganj, was arrested on Wednesday night. The RAB team also seized his passport and mobile phone.
Speaking to reporters, RAB 11 Senior Assistant Director Police Md Shakil Ahmed said Selim was involved in abduction of 17 children.
“Selim used to drive a human hauler in 1999, when he was arrested with firearms over a robbery plot. He had been behind bars for four months. After coming out of jail on bail, he flew to Saudi Arabia and returned home within 27 days,” added Shakil, also an additional superintendent of police.
He said: “Later, he took up a job at a Narayaganj cement factory, but he fled the factory with some 400 bags of cement and got engaged in child kidnapping.
“Selim and his cohorts used to kidnap children from Jatrabari, Kamalpur, Sadarghat and Narayanganj.”
On January 18, another team of RAB 11 arrested six members of the gang during a drive after Most Dalim of Narayanganj’s Bandar upazila filed a general diary with the police after her eight-year old son, Bayezid, had been abducted from the upazila on December 27 last year.
Later, the law enforcers gleaned information from them about Selim and the 17 children, two of whom died due to excessive sedatives injected by the traffickers.
