Customs Intelligence officials detained a man with 447 grams of gold – worth Tk25 lakh – at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Saturday evening.
The 38-year-old detainee, Md Mohiuddin, hid three small gold bars inside his wrist watch. The buckle of his belt was also made of gold, and he had 100 grams of gold jewellery in a pouch.
Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate’s (CIID) Director General (Media) Dr Moinul Khan confirmed the matter. He said: "Acting on a tip-off, our team searched Mohiuddin while he was hurrying off and crossing the green channel."
Mohiuddin has travelled abroad seven times this year which made Customs Intelligence officials doubt him, Dr Moinul said.
Mohiuddin is a driver by profession, and came from Dubai. He was handed to the airport police by CIID officials.
