A Bogra court has asked Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the death of a BNP leader in police custody.
Judge Abu Raihan passed the order on Tuesday. The court also asked PBI to form a probe team of with officers higher than inspector rank and submit report within September 7.
Masudul Haque Pintu, 48, president of Ashekpur ward BNP, died in police custody on August 22. His wife Khairunnisa lodged a case with Senior Judicial Magistrate Court against 12 persons, including four police officials, on August 28.
According to the case statement, Pintu had rivalry with his neighbours Milton and Neuton over properties. On August 19, Milton filed a false case against Pintu as an outcome of their rivalry.
Later, on August 22, Shajahanpur police station’s Koigari outpost in-charge Anisur Rahman and three other police officials came to Pintu’s residence along with Mintul and Neuton.
The police officials along with Mintul and Neuton started beating Pintu. He was taken to Bogra Shahid Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital by the police officials through a local three-wheeler after being severely injured. Later, the on duty doctors of the hospital declared him dead, says the case statement.
Pintu’s body was sent for post-mortem and later buried under police surveillance in presence of his family members.
Pintu’s family expressed concern about their security as they received life threats from the family members of the accused.
