When Alam Pramanik - the suspected militant who was killed in an explosion at a militant den in Mymensingh's Bhaluka upazila on Sunday - left his father's home five months ago, he promised to return with Tk1 lakh.
Alam used to drive vehicles for Pran-RFL Group in his home district. He had a transfer order to shift to the group's Ghorashal office in Narsingi district, but was not willing to leave home.
Instead, the 35-year-old planned to buy a battery-run autorickshaw to find a new source of livelihood.
“He pursued me to give him Tk1 lakh to buy an autorickshaw for. He was to get the rest of the money from his in-laws,” Alam's father Abul Kalam said while talking to the Dhaka Tribune from the family home in Taltala Raager Mor area under Chhatni union of Natore Sadar upazila.
Abul Kalam is an office assistant at Natore Nawab Siraj-ud-Doula Government College. It was outside his means to afford the amount. Upon his refusal, Alam along with his wife Parveen and two sons left the family house on April 7.
Alam said he was moving his family to Ghorashal and would return home only with the Tk1 lakh savings, added Abul Kalam.
Last time Alam made a phone call to his mother-in-law Firoza Begum was on June 24, two days before the Eid-ul-Fitr.

“As both Alam and Parveen did not make any contact for a while, Faruk (Alam's brother-in-law) went to Pran's Ghorashal office to learn of whereabouts. But there was no trace of them. Suddenly, two days before the Eid, Alam made a phone call and informed he was driving a private car in Dhaka. He said the family was also with him and that everything was alright,” said Firoza.
Alam told his mother-in-law that he would visit her during Eid, but did not make any further contact. The SIM he used to make the last phone call was also found inactive.
Some days later on July 6, Alam's father Abul Kalam filed a general diary (GD) with Natore Sadar police station.
On Monday morning, a team of police went to the village and gave him the news of the death of his son.
The family is yet to see the dead body and confirm its identity, but Abul Kalam has already decided not to accept it.
“We will not accept the dead body of any traitor,” he said.
