Two witnesses testify at court in seven-murder case

Update : 28 Mar 2016, 10:08 PM

A Narayanganj court took deposition of two witnesses in the seven-murder case yesterday in the presence of the 23 arrested suspects in the case.

Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Syed Enayet Hossain took the deposition of the two witnesses – Narayanganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Chandi Rupam and Mizanur Rahman, brother of one of the victims Moniruzzaman Swapan.

The 23 accused – including prime suspect former ward councillor Nur Hossain and three former officials of Rapid Action Battalion – were brought to the court amid tight security from Dhaka Central Jail and  Kashimpur Jail.

The court also fixed Thursday for the next session for the deposition of witnesses, said Public Prosecutor Wazed Ali Khokon.

The new date was fixed to take deposition of Shahidul Islam, father-in-law of Nazrul Islam, who was also among the seven victims, along with two other witnesses.

Shahidul was scheduled to testify yesterday, but the defence counsels objected to him testifying before the court since he was present at the court when Chandni and Mizan testified, which is not permissible, said Khokon.

Earlier, charges were framed on February 8 this year against 35 suspects, named by police in the case’s charge sheet submitted in court on April 8 last year. Among the 35 suspects, 23 were arrested and 12 still remain in hiding.

On April 27, 2014, Narayanganj City Corporation’s panel mayor Nazrul Islam, his friend Moniruzzaman Swapan, Tajul Islam, Liton, lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarkar and their drivers Jahangir Alam and Ibrahim went missing in Narayanganj. Their bodies were later found in the Shitalakkhya River on April 30 and May 1.
