A man has died in a shootout with a gang of drug peddlers and extortionists, claimed Rapid Action Battalion in Gazipur, .
The incident took place in Nau-bandar area under Tongi early on Friday.
The dead, Delwar Hossain alias Delu, 36, is the son of Rahim Uddin Gazi from Arichpur area of Tongi.
Nayek Nasir Uddin and Constable Hafizur Rahman were injured in the gunfight and treated at Tongi Hospital.
RAB 1 acting operation officer Md Nazmul Hasan Rajib said they received a tip-off that some drug peddlers and extortionists, including Delwar, were distributing extortion money among themselves in the premises of a kiln around 3am, and a RAB team raided the site.
Sensing their presence, the miscreants started firing at the RAB patrol team, forcing them to retaliate in a shootout in which Delwar received bullet wounds, the operation officer added.
Later, Delwar was taken to Tongi hospital where physicians declared him dead.
A foreign-made pistol, a magazine, four rounds of bullets, a lighter gun, 196 yaba tablets, three knives, and Tk10,000 were discovered at the spot.
Tongi police station Officer-in-Charge (investigation) Md Aminul Islam said Delwar was accused in several cases filed there.
