Stolen newborn rescued, 2 held

Police have rescued a newborn boy from a private hospital in the city on Friday, a day after he was stolen from another hospital.

The law enforcers also arrested Nasima Begum Shabana, 35, and her husband Abdul Mannan Jamaddar, 45, in this connection. Hailing from Barisal district, the couple used to reside at Aichgati village in Rupsha upazila.

Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, Khulna Sadar police station OC, said Nasima and Mannan took the newborn to Medipath Clinic and Diagnostic Centre at Santidham intersection in the city, saying that he fell sick after his birth.

Observing their suspicious activities, Nasir Uddin, manager of the clinic, informed police in the morning.

Later, police along with the father of the newborn rushed in and rescued him at noon.

The OC said Sanjida Begum, wife of Idris Ali of Nandanpur in Rupsha upazila, gave birth to the boy and his twin sister at Khulna General Hospital on March 15.

The baby boy went missing from the hospital on Thursday morning. Idris Sheikh filed a case with the Sadar police station in this connection the same day.
