Mob kills 4 suspected robbers

At least four people suspected to be robbers were beaten to death while two others were gravely injured by an angry mob at Chairman Ghat in Hatiya upazila, Noakhali yesterday.

Three police members were also injured in the incident, sources said.

The deceased were identified as Akbar Siddiq, 28, from Joypurhat, Ashiqur Rahman, 27, and his younger brother Saiful Islam Sujon 25, from Govindaganj in Dinajpur, and Sunam, 25, from Chapainawabganj.

The injured robbers – Sumon, 28, from Chilirbandar in Dinajpur, Abu Bakar, 35, from Chapainawabganj – were taken to Noakhali General Hospital for treatment. Among the injured police members, Fazlul Haque and Jahangir Alam were admitted at Noakhali General Hospital and Md Kamrul Islam was admitted at Char Jabber Upazila Health Complex.

Talking to the Dhaka Tribune, Hatiya police station OC Arisul Haque said a boat carrying a gang of 10-12 people reached Chairman Ghat around 12:30am on Saturday. Suspecting them to be robbers, the locals informed police who conducted an instant drive and captured four of the suspected criminals.

“Acting on the information provided by the detained robbers, we launched a search for their cohorts hiding in the area. But the criminals came out of hiding and attacked the Chairman Ghat police camp, leaving three policemen injured,” the OC said.

Following the incident, locals chased the rest of the gang and gave them a good beating. Four of the robbers died on the spot while two were severely injured. The rest of them escaped, the OC added.

The four dead bodies was taken to Noakhali General Hospital for an autopsy.
