The Supreme Court yesterday commuted the death sentence of a member of the banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) in a case filed for the bomb attack on a judge in Sylhet in 2005.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain reduced the death penalty of Akhtaruzzaman and order him to jail until death. He passed the order after hearing an appeal filed by the JMB man against his death penalty which was upheld by the High Court.
The death sentence was commuted taking into cognisance the age of the convict during the incident. He was 19.
On October 18, 2005, Biplob Goswami – judge of a speedy trial tribunal in Sylhet was injured in the bomb attack in Kumarpara area of Sylhet. The driver of his car, Abdus Salam, filed the case with Kotwali police station under the Explosive Substances Act.
The District and Sessions Judge’s Court of Sylhet sentenced Akhtaruzzaman to death in the bomb attack case on February 28, 2006.
