Babul admits to having Musa as an informant

Update : 30 Oct 2017, 01:39 AM
The confession came while he was being questioned by Additional Deputy Commissioner (North) Mohammed Kamruzzaman of Detective Branch, also investigation officer of the murder case, at Chittagong Metropolitan Police headquarters on Thursday. “We called in Babul to discuss and share some information as he is the plaintiff of the murder case”, told ADC Mohammed Kamruzzaman while talking to the Dhaka Tribune yesterday evening. However, Kamruzzaman said it was not an interrogation. “We had some information relating to the case to discuss with him and that is when he confessed that Musa was his informant for many years.” Since the murder, investigators have been stating that Musa reportedly worked for the police. CMP has already declared Tk500,000 bounty for the whereabouts of Musa.

When asked if there was any discussion regarding the motive behind murder, ADC Kamruzzaman said: “Yes that was discussed, however, Babul was unable to point to any definitive reason.”

CMP Commissioner Iqbal Bahar, on the issue, said only the arrest of Musa would unearth the mystery behind the murder and police have been continuously working to find his whereabouts as he has been on the run since the murder.

Asked, ADC Kamruzzaman said Babul Akter would be called again to CMP if needed for the sake of investigation.

However, the ADC did not make any comment when asked why the former SP made the confession after almost seven months.

On October 6, the CMP chief told reporters that Babul would come to Chittagong on invitation of the investigation officer of the case for a formal discussion.

So far, investigators have arrested seven accused in the murder case. Of them, two – Anwar and Wasim – had given their confessional statement before a court under Section 164 of the CrPC.

However, two other accused of the murder case were killed in a gunfight with police in Chittagong’s Raozan upazila on July 5. Apart from that, police have arrested the firearms supplier Ehteshamul Hoque Bhola alias Bhoila. The two pistols found in his possession is believed to have been used in the murder of Mitu. Police had submitted the charge-sheet in the arms case filed with Bakalia police station implicating Bhola and his associate Monir. Babul’s wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, mother of two children, was stabbed and shot to death near her house in the port city’s GEC area by three men on June 5. The incident took place when she was on her way to drop her two grader son Akter Mahmud Maheer at a school bus. After the murder, on June 25, Babul Akter was picked up from his father-in-law’s house in Dhaka and was being quizzed in police custody in connection with his wife’s murder. During the quizzing, a rumor cooked up that Babul was arrested for his alleged connection with Mitu murder but the then police official was freed after 15-hours. Later Babul was relieved from his duty on September 6 as he reportedly applied to the Home Ministry seeking his resignation. The former police official, however, appealed to the Home Ministry on August 9 for withdrawal of this resignation but failed.
