Journalist leaders of the Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ) yesterday issued a three-day ultimatum to arrest and cancel the studentship of Chittagong Medical College (CMC) unit Chhatra League President Rashedul Islam over assault of a photo journalist.
The journalists’ platform also threatened to lunch tougher movement to press their home demand.
Apart from this, the journalist leaders also declared to boycott all the news of Chittagong Medical College, doctors and Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) until the demands are met.
Protesting the brutal attack on Daily Prothom Alo of Chittagong office’s photo journalist Juel Shil by some BCL men, CUJ organised a rally in front of Chittagong Press Club in the morning.
Juel took some photographs when some Chhatra League men were beating up a person. Then, the BCL men caught Juel and beat him up indicriminately.
Presided over by CUJ’s President Ezaz Usufi, the rally was addressed by Poet Abul Momen, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists’ Vice-President Shahidul Islam and Joint Secretary Tapon Chowdhury, Chittagong Press Club President Kalim Sarwar and its General Secretary Mohsin Chowdhury, CUJ’s General Secretary Hasan Ferdous, Vice-President Ratan Kanti Debasis and Bangladesh Photo Journalist Association’s General Secretary Rashed Mahmud were present at the rally.
Terming the BCL leader Rashed as “thug” the CUJ president’s Ezaz Usufi said: “From the rally we are issuing a three-day ultimatum to the medical college authority, BCL central committee and police administration to expel Rashed from college, organisation and turned the GD filed by Juel into a case.
“If the demands were not met up by February 21, we will declare tougher action on February 22.”
