Injured in a miscreant attack, Sydur Rahman Basu, former president of Gopalganj Motor Workers’ Union, died yesterday in a hospital in Dhaka.
Sources said Basu came under attack while two groups of workers got locked in a clash in Fakirkandi area on Wednesday night.
Jasu Sheikh, brother of Basu, said the miscreants hacked his brother leaving him critically injured while he was returning home from Kuakata Motor Workers Union office around 11pm.
Later, locals rescued him and admitted to Goplaganj General Hospital from where he was sent to National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation, Sher-e-Bangla nagar, Dhaka. He died in the morning.
At the death of the leader, agitated locals blocked the highway in the district. Plying of vehicles stopped in all routs.
Police said a tense situation is prevailing around the town.
Saogatul Alam, officer-in-charge of Gopalganj police station, said Basu might have been killed in an attack by his rivals.
Additional police forces had been deployed in the area, he said.
The people of Bsu also attacked the houses of Babul, a rival of Basu in the area after the incident.
