Update : 17 Feb 2016, 07:35 PM

A sub-inspector of Dhaka’s Banani police station has confessed to his involvement in the gold snatching incident in Fulbaria last Monday.

An investigating officer yesterday said that SI Ashraf Hossain  had made the confession. The officer also said policemen usually remain stationed within their areas of jurisdiction. He said he did not understand why the SI went to Bangshal.

Investigators were also trying to find out whether he followed instructions.

A source from the police station sources said it was also found that Ashraf did not inform any of the colleagues about going there.

It is a responsibility of a policeman to inform his police station prior to entering the area under another police station, the investigator said.

Sources also said they were yet to interrogate Ashraf.

Besides, police also investigated if the gold trader was real businessman or a smuggler.

Bangshal police station Inspector Sheikh Nasir Uddin said Ashraf provided important information over the snatching. But he declined to comment over the progress for the sake of fare investigaiton.

All of them were detained by police when Ashraful and Abdur Razzaq on Monday snatched away five gold bars from Rezaul Karim on the North South Road of Bangshal in Old Town.

Rezaul was going to Jessore with 900 kilogrammes of gold from the capital’s Tantibazar area.

SI Ashraful along with his informant Abdur Razzak stopped Rezaul in front of New Suveccha Hotel on the North South Road in Bangshal around 7pm on Monday and tried to snatch the gold.

Later Bangshal police patrol team took them to the police station and filed two case in connection with the incident.
