Update : 12 Feb 2016, 07:55 PM

Police have arrested five people, a day after about Tk50 lakh of Publai Bank went missing while being transported to Chittagong City from its Sitakunda branch on a microbus.

The arrestees are Sitakunda branch Cashier Rajibur Rahman, security personnel Ashiqur Rahman, Tanjur Rahman, Majharul Islam and microbus driver Bijoy Kumar Das.

Assistant General Manger of Chittagong CDA Corporate branch of Pubali Bank Toufiqur Rahman lodged a complaint with Sitakunda police on Thursday night. However, the law enforcers are yet to recover the missing money.

Sitakunda police station’ Officer-in-Charge (investigation) Riyad Mahmud claimed the arrestees were involved with the incident. “We suspect someone from the bank was also involved.”

“Most of the banks of Sitakunda area seek cooperation from the police for shipping money. However, the branch authorities did not seek help from us for transporting the money,” Md Iftekhar Hassan, officer-in-charge of Sitakunda police station.

“The incident seems to be mysterious to us. We will take legal steps after the bank authorities file case in this regard,” said Dulal Hossain, second officer of Sitakunda police station.

Meanwhile, a Chittagong court yesterday granted police two-day remand for four persons and one day to question another.

The four persons are Ashiqur Rahman, Rajibur Rahman, Tanjur Rahman, Majharul Islam. Microbus driver Bijoy Kumar Das has been sent on a one-day remand.

The police prayed for a seven-day remand. However, Senior Judicial Magistrate Shiblu Kumar Dey granted four-day and one-day remands respectively.
