The Rapid Action Battalion has rescued a two-day-old baby from Dhaka's Banani when it was being sold.
Four persons were detained from a flat on the first floor of MashAllash Mansion, building number 137 of Shantibagh Chairmanbari area yesterday afternoon for their alleged involvement in the incident, RAB 3 operation officer Rabiul Karim said.
The detainees are Salma Begum, 33, her husband Saiful Islam, 34, Anowara Begum, 46, and one Babu, 36.
RAB sources said Salma, a former nurse, used to procure newborns from poor families, saying she was infertile and sold the babies to others.
A RAB 3 team, led by Major Kamran Kabir Uddin, raided the house acting on a tip off. They caught the four red-handed when they were transacting Tk1 lakh, presumably during the process of trading the baby.
ASP Rabiul said it was unclear if the baby's mother had sold her own child or it was stolen from her.
