Being frustrated by continuous torture of in-laws a housewife attempted to commit suicide setting her on fire at Chandkarim village, Sadullapur upazila, Gaibandha in the early hours of yesterday.
Several parts of the body of Rumi Begum, 22, was burnt and she admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital in critical state.
Rezaul Karim, father of the victim, told the Dhaka Tribune that family members of Raihan Mia, husband of Rumi, had been torturing her since the beginning of marriage over dowry. He said he had given Tk50,000 as dowry, but in-laws of Rumi continued torturing her.
On the day, Raihan and his family members severely assaulted her over the issue. At one stage, Rumi poured kerosine on her body and set it on fire. Hearing her screams, neighbouring people rushed to the spot and took her to Sadullapur Upazila Health Complex from where she was shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
Dr Sajib Chandra Ray, residential medical officer of the health complex, told the Dhaka Tribune that 30% of Rumi’s body had been burnt.
Officer-in-Charge of Sadullapur police station told the Dhaka Tribune that they had arrested husband of Rumi Begum, 20, for instigating her to commit suicide. A case was filed in this connection.
