The case filed over the death of Mirpur tea stall owner Babul Matubbor, has been handed over to the Detective Branch (DB) of Police for investigation.
Deputy Commissioner (media) of DMP Maruf Hossain Sardar confirmed this to the Dhaka Tribune yesterday afternoon.
On Sunday, police submitted the investigation report on the tea seller’s death.
The report found that five officials including Shah Ali police station's Officer-in-Charge Shahin Mondol did not discharge their duties properly during the attack on Babul Matubbor and failed to take necessary actions in the aftermath of the incident.
On February 3, Babul received severe burn injuries when a team of Shah Ali police allegedly attacked him causing an oil spill from his stove. He was admitted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital with 70% burns and succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Babul's family alleged the policemen attacked him after he had refused to pay extortion money. But police refuted the allegations and dubbed the victim a drug peddler. They claimed Babul had sustained burns when trying to flee from them.
Six policemen, including Shah Ali police OC, were withdrawn and police formed two committees to investigate the incident. On Sunday, an investigation faulted four policemen over Babul's death.
