A pregnant woman was stabbed to death allegedly by her husband at Dighli village in Bishwanath upazila, Sylhet yesterday morning.
Quoting family members, police said there had been a long standing dispute between Halima Begum Helena, 22, and her husband Nazrul Islam Zulfikar who was a CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver over family matter.
Masudur Rahman, officer in-charge (investigation) of Bishwanath police station, said Halima’s husband called her in their house when she was washing cloth in the pond around 8am. When Halima entered a room of the house, Zulfikar locked the door from inside. Later, Zulfikar’s mother heard the screams of Halima and knocked the door.
Finding no response, she informed the locals who entered the room by cutting the tin roof and found Zulfikar sitting beside dead Halima.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Police also arrested Zulfikar in this connection.
“During primary investigation, Zulfikar confessed that he stabbed Halima,” the OC added. Family members claimed that Zulfikar was a mentally ill person.
